Nat mur has been a lifesaver in my personal struggle with migraines. Others I know have found relief from ailments ranging from senstive eyes to depression. Keep reading to find out more about why I love this remedy!
First, some basic information:
- Full Latin name: Natrum muriaticum
- Abbreviation: Nat-m.
- Common name: Common salt
- Keynote: Hayfever
This remedy is a great example of how substances you find around your house (like common table salt) can be used for medicinal purposes when prepared homeopathically. This remedy can be used in all potencies, including all C and X potencies. I have personally used it in 6X (which is the cell salt), 6C, 30C, and 200C. Let’s dive in to some specific indications for Nat mur.

Mind (Mental Symptoms)
Nat mur is well-known for the relief it can bring in states of depression. Of course, persistent depression should be overseen by a doctor, but if you feel yourself slipping into a depressed state, a few doses of Nat mur could help prevent it. One major cause of depression that points to Nat mur is a sudden broken relationship that leaves you lonely. Try one or two doses if you experience depression after the death of a loved one, after divorce, or someone ending a relationship with you. Even in cases where a teen discovers their crush doesn’t like them back, give Nat mur a try to relieve the sadness.
Hormones can have an effect on emotions as well and are often related to a need for Nat mur. If you experience deep sadness or depression for no reason, evalutate your life to see if there has been any recent hormonal shifts related to your feelings. A need for Nat mur can be related to poor thyroid function, to your monthly cycle, or to the pregnancy and post-partum time.
I always like to touch on sleep in the mind section because it is SO important to maintaining health. If a grief or event that has caused you depression and the thoughts of this event keep you up at night, Nat mur may help you sleep. Also think of Nat mur if you are having dreams about this event that have caused you sadness.
Body (Physical Symptoms)
As I alluded to above, Nat mur is a wonderful remedy for migraines and headaches. The headache can be related to the mental symptoms I described above, but they don’t have to be. You could also get a headache from the fear of being rejected when faced with a big event or relationship milestone. Regardless of the cause, a headache that may be helped by Nat mur is often recognized by the fact that it is aggravated (made worse) by being exposed to sunlight or bright lights.
Related to light, another symptom that Nat mur can help with is eye sensitivity. There are many reasons for the eyes to become tired or worn out, but eye ailments needing Nat mur will likely be much worse in the sunlight. If you find that you have to wear sunglasses much more than the people around you, Nat mur could be a good remedy to try.
The reason that “hayfever” is a keynote for Nat mur is because it can be helpful for symptoms that resemble the miserable-ness of constant spring allergies. Symptoms might include headache and watery discharges from the eyes and nose. You may have a cough that causes your eyes to water. Or you could have sneezing fits either caused by the drainage or that make the drainage worse. Nat mur is also a wonderful remedy for fever blisters if that is a problem for you when you catch a cold.
Heart (Emotional Symptoms)
We already talked about depression as it relates to symptoms helped by Nat mur, but I want to talk about the nature of the depression. It might be a good sign that Nat mur can help you if you feel lonely during your depression. The lonelines is very often related to a physical loss of a person you are very fond of. This does not have to be a romantic relationship but could also include childhood friendships or those you admire from afar.
Another emotion that Nat mur may help with is the fear of betrayal. This fear can take many forms. It may be that you are afraid of a loved one leaving you, that you are afraid of not having control of a situation, or that you fear being embarrassed or ridiculed by those you trust. It may be difficult for you to trust others because you have an underlying fear that getting too close to someone will only bring about disappointment.
Cell salt
Finally, I want to talk about the cell salt a little bit. Using Nat mur as a cell salt means you are using a 6X or 12X potency, typically for an extended period of time. If you find that Nat mur helps you in a C potency, you can take the cell salt 2-3 times a day to help prevent your ailments. Some other ailments the cell salt can be used for include double vision, eczema, and fatigue. Check out this great book for more ways to use the cell salt.
Here’s a quick dosing tip to take with you:

I have used Nat mur in a 6C for migraine prevention and depression, in a 30C and 200C for eye strain and migraines that have set in, and in a 6X when I start to crave salt (the cell salt can help balance your sodium levels).
